This operation will benefit the producers, exporters, importers and agents of the logistics chain, in response to the demand of producers in the northern area of the Dominican Republic to have greater facilities for logistics operations with the Baltic region in Europe. The news was announced in the context of World Food Moscow, in Russia, in which the minister participated of Agriculture of the Dominican Republic, Osmar Benítez and the commercial vice president of Marítima Dominicana (Mardom), Manuel Peña.
Ambos held a meeting with the main executives of the shipping company to promote banana exports. It should be mentioned that the start of operations will materialize the second week of January with the arrival of the first vessel, It will embark about 500 tons of bananas, starting from the port of Manzanillo, in Montecristi, towards Europe.
Peña highlighted that 2017 was a year of great challenges for agricultural producers in the northern region, especially those in the banana sector, due to the decline in exports due to the harmful effects on production as a consequence of the torrential rains and floods following the passage of hurricanes Irma and María. “Our producers have recovered from the strong conditions that affected them in 2017 and there is currently a high demand and the need to open markets to export bananas, “he stressed. Increase in exports Mardom’s vice president pointed out that the entry n Baltic Shipping operations in the Montecristi area would mean an increase in exports and the possibility for the farmers of that province to place their products in other international markets, taking into account that in that place more than a third of the production of bananas from the Dominican Republic.
It is estimated that the reincorporation of this service in the Port of Manzanillo will generate around 250 direct jobs and up to 1,000 indirect jobs, associated with exports and economic activities of the sector.
